Family reunification for your partner and children after you receive a permit.

Permit granted

Renewal, a regular permit, integration and – later – Dutch citizenship.

New rules 2026

What changed on 12 June 2026?

The asylum procedure is shorter and stricter. Your preparation matters more than ever.

What changed

The new procedure

  • The European Pact on Migration and Asylum applies from 12 June 2026
  • Screening at the start: identity, security and health
  • Fewer steps – the intended decision procedure was abolished
  • Two statuses: refugee status and subsidiary protection
  • No new permanent asylum permits since 12 June 2026
What stays

Your rights

  • Every application is assessed individually and with care
  • Free legal assistance from an assigned lawyer
  • An interpreter during your interview
  • The right to appeal a refusal in court
  • Reception and housing during the procedure
Two statuses

Refugee or subsidiary protection?

Since 12 June 2026 the IND grants one of two statuses. The difference matters for your family.

Process

From registration to decision

1

Registration

You report to the application centre. Your identity is registered and checked.

2

Screening

Identity, security and health. The IND decides which procedure applies – including Dublin.

3

Interview

You explain why you fled. An interpreter is present and your lawyer is assigned in advance.

4

Decision

The IND decides – faster than before, as the intended decision step no longer exists.

5

Appeal or permit

Refused: appeal to the court. Granted: housing, a municipality and family reunification.

Appeal and new application

We assess the decision quickly and act within the deadline.

Family reunification

From the application to the MVV visa and your family’s arrival.

Renewal, change of status, integration and naturalisation.

Family

Bringing your family to the Netherlands

Who can come

Your core family

  • Your spouse or partner
  • Your minor children
  • Family members must prove the family bond
  • The rules are stricter for subsidiary protection (B)
Important

Avoid delays

  • Apply as soon as possible after your permit
  • Collect birth and marriage certificates early
  • A DNA test may be offered if documents are missing
  • The family member collects the MVV at the embassy
Avoid refusal

Common reasons for refusal

Contradictions

Different dates or details in your statements weaken your whole story.

Missing evidence

Documents that exist but were not submitted – or not translated.

Missed deadlines

Appeal deadlines in asylum cases are short – sometimes only one week.

Dublin overlooked

Fingerprints in another EU country can mean that country is responsible.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where do I apply for asylum?

At the central application centre in Ter Apel. If you arrive by plane, you report at Schiphol.

Do I need my own lawyer?

You receive a free assigned lawyer. We can work alongside them, or represent you at the IND and in court.

What is the Dublin procedure?

If another EU country is responsible for your application – for example because you were registered there first – you may be transferred to that country.

Can I work during the procedure?

Usually after six months in the procedure, under conditions. Your employer needs a work permit for you.

My application was refused. What now?

You can appeal to the court. Deadlines are short, so contact us the same day you receive the decision.

Is my asylum permit permanent?

No new permanent asylum permits have been issued since 12 June 2026. Later you may qualify for a regular permit or Dutch citizenship.

Can I apply again after a refusal?

Only with new facts or circumstances that were not assessed before. We check whether your case qualifies.
